I couldn't wait for Don to call me back about how to look in the skimmer, so I went back outside and turned the pot over - YEA!!! I definitely saw 2 of the fish alive and well, and THINK I saw the third one too.
Please excuse my slight hysteria earlier - it's just that I love my pets so much! :ding:
Mine hide a lot Lynne, especially if it's really sunny.....they mostly stay under stuff I have floating in the pond, or inside that Cinder block that is in there. Until they become really familiar with their new home they will hide a lot. When I first put mine in they hid for a long time.
I'm so glad I don't have to worry about Raccoons, we do have a lot of feral cats around here but I've only ever caught them drinking out of the pond.
I've been trying to find an all bright yellow baby koi at PetSmart, but haven't yet. I went today - they get their fish shipments in on Mondays. I did get 2 babies though - they both have yellow heads, and one is all white on the rest, and the other is white with black speckles. Now all FIVE of the fish out there have been hiding under the pot!!!
I did see the 2 koi when I fed the fish about an hour ago, but Don's shadow scared them and they swam back under the pot. The koi seem a bit more brave than the goldfish that I've had for 3 years already - strange!
Don took these pictures yesterday, so I thought I'd share them. First is of the whole pond. Still a work in progress.
Next is the pot shelter.
And lastly a view of one side of the waterfall hill.
The waterfall and pump have been on for about 2 weeks now, and Don even admitted that he "can't believe how much water was escaping by the top of the waterfall before!" UH huh - who kept saying that to him last year???
Yes I am looking for another shelter for the fish - definitely! Don't know what yet, but I started looking today.
Yes - I potted up the water lilies yesterday and put them in - they were not doing well at all in the house - actually fried a lot in the sun one day, so they are marginal right now. Keeping my fingers crossed for them...
It's so great that you are finally getting some enjoyment out of your pond. I know how exciting it is....and as you plant stuff around it, things will start to look totally different and fill in.
Do you get regular birds, not ducks ( ) coming to drink out of it? I get tons with mine, even though I have 2 birdbaths.
ohhhhhhhhh loz - I have been enjoying watching the robins bathe in the waterfall from time to time. Not so thrilled about the starlings though... but it really has become a very nice natural habitat out there!
