A friend of mine just told me in an IM that she had a snapping turtle in her pool this summer and she apparently layed eggs, and 8 babies were born today. She thinks there will be more by tomorrow. She wants to get rid of them, and I am thinking about maybe putting them in our new pond.

Does anyone know about them? Will they hurt my fish? Are they dangerous? Will they survive? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

We have snapping turtles down ta' da' crick. They eatses the fishies and can bite sumthin' feers. plus they gets ta be HUGE!!!! They'd be OK in a crick or river or BIG pond or sumthin' but I'd keep them outta yor small fish pond.

Thanks, Thorny! I was just reading up on them, and have come to that same conlusion - they don't sound like very nice pets at all!!!

I have to wonder if she really has snappers, or if it might be some other kind of turtle? I'm tempted to take one to a pet store and find out... she wants them gone tomorrow, so I might do that.

We had a snapper for a while; cool 'pet'. My husband put him in a small tank under a bush while he cleaned the larger tank. He didn't finish cleaning that day and the next day...sun moved. The turtle was aptly named, Turtlelicious cuz by that afternoon the hot sun made turtle soup! yikes Poor Turtlelicious tears

Poor turtlelicious!!! tears

WOW Cindy - I did read last night that they will eat anything they can get into their mouths, and if they can't get it in, they will shred it until they can!!! shock uhuhh

I'm going to see if my friend will let me take one to the petstore to confirm if it really is a snapping turtle. If it's a harmless one, then I will take them - otherwise, no way JOSE!!! nervous

I am not afraid of most wild animals, heck I chase bears through my yard to get a picture. I am terrified of snapping turtles.

I never did see the baby turtles - she insisted that they were indeed snapping turtles, and I didn't want any of those around. She ended up taking them to a large lake in the county and letting them loose.

I saw ( not heard) on the tv the other morning and wondered if they were the "forum turtles" that I read about.... guess theres a lot of these things hatching out this time of year.

This is what happens when you try to raise baby snapping turtles by hand (literally)!

It's gone!......But I lost it in 1977, in a machine called a, "Hand Joiner". In my case it was a Hand DIS-joiner. People say that when you accidentally amputate part of your body it doesn't hurt. THAT IS A LIE!!!!!! It was one of the worse pains I've ever had. Only an abscessed tooth and kidney stones hurt as much.
