It seems I tend to be lucky enough to hit Lowe's at the right time. They had just marked down more plants to only $1! I bought 2 Uncharted Waters Daylilies (normally $10 ea.) and a variegated caryopteris. They also had some Neon Sedum, Homestaed Purple Verbena, various hostas and cannas, plus another type of daylily for only 50 cents. My back porch is full of bargain plants just waiting for cool weather so I can plant them. Looks like I'll be busy this fall...

What wonderful finds for you, Alan!!!
Like others have mentioned here, our Lowes does not ever mark down their plants, but then again, if they did, it would be dried sticks in pots - they take terrible care of their small selection.

I can't wait to see pictures of your new great finds!

Nice score Alan! I wish we could leave cannas in over the winter.

Wrennie, have you tried leaving your cannas in the ground? With a good layer of mulch they can often survive really cold winters. Mine survive temps as low as 10 degrees with no problem, and that's without mulch.

I decided to hit another Lowe's. They had the same plants marked 50% off. When I asked to get the same price as the other store, she refused saying theirs may have been in bad shape. When I assured her they were in no worse shape than hers, she still refused. So I just fired off a nasty letter to Lowe's. I would understand if they were different plants, but I was asking about the exact same plants! All she had to do was pick up the phone and call the other store.

The Lowes close to my neighborhood does not have that type of sales, they do bring down the prices drastically when they fail to water plans and are at the edge of dying. I went recently and they were cleaned out, except for some perennials that at this time of year are still at the same price as in the spring. What a bummer!

I got a call from the manager of the Lowe's I mentioned above. He gave me some bull about company policy being that they couldn't reduce distressed plants more than 50%, blah, blah, blah. But just last month I bought several plants from his store for $1 as well, far below the supposed 50% company policy. Oh well...no big deal...I don't think I'll lose any sleep over it.

This has been an interesting thread. As other have stated, my Lowe's doesn't discount more than 50% until the plants are dead, and then I imagine they throw them away after a few weeks.

After reading about your call from the manager, I think I will take a different tack -- tell them that HOME DEPOT is selling them for $1.00 each or 75% off or whatever. :))

A friend of mine used to work at Lowe's. He said you wouldn't believe the amount of plants they end up throwing away. Plus, all the materials they use like pavers, bricks, etc. for displays also just get thrown away. Employees weren't allowed to take any of it either, not even at a discounted price.

I left some in one year because i decided i didnt have enough room to overwinter the tuberbulbwhatevertheyare inside. They didnt come back, but i didnt mulch either. My winters commonly have a couple of weeks of negative degrees. I would need a LOT of mulch.

I was at Lowes yesterday.I got some plants for $1.Big sky seris coneflowers and a razzmatatazz. Then for a better deal...I got a snow queen cape fuchsia for .12,a rhea salvia.12(gave to lady at BIL last job when we stopped)I didn't notice the sign SIL did...it said the lower 2 shelves of plants we're $1 a flat(12 plants)If i'd known...I'd bought a FLAT of the cape fuchsia.I did buy a full price plant.. a purple deco mum...BIL kindly laid a dolly on it so the center got crushed some...got a piece rooting and think the rest will survive till after bloom.I spent like $8.50 I wish I could go to lowes more often....but my yard would be double the fullness.....so is good.

I also asked the checkout girl about one of my plants ...lost a purple butterfly bush...so they won't replace if is over a year?she didn't pull my info up by phone # she would have needed the manager that just left from doing the over ride. anyone????I believe the 1 year was in July.

I've been to Lowe's only once and didn't like it at all.
They could learn alot from Home Depot.
Even Target has a better garden center than Lowe's.
My favorite though is Armstrong Garden Center.

You got a Razzmatazz!!! I've been looking for one all year but none of our Lowe's or HD's had any. I'm so envious. I found one at Lowe's 2 years ago in the late summer, but it hasn't done well. I think I'm gonna have to move it to a better spot. I want another one! Wah!!!!

The one we are referring to is a type of echinacea or purple coneflower.

Oh thanks, I have never heard of them. I have different purple coneflowers but have no idea what the true variety is. Anyone have a pic to share?

Tamara here is one from a website. It is a spectacular flower. It stopped me dead on my tracks yesterday. The house that had them had a whole bunch in bloom.

I love that razzmatazz I want it to Alan.
The Lowes here only sale their plants when they are Brown crispy sticks rolzthen you can buy them for 75% off,and they never have Coneflowers or any of the unusual species ,, All they get here are common flowers the same ones year after year,, I think maybe someone needs to talk to the ordering person, OR change supplier! egad

I am so going to Lowes tomorrow!!!! Ours also takes terrible care of their plants, which is good for me because they also deep discount all the ones they half kill! Heck for a buck or so I can take it home and pop it in the ground and wait to see if it lives. Almost all of my plants started out as runts or just plain small cheap plants. I could have gotten xoria for $8.97 @ Lowes or HD, but picked them up at a grocery store of all places for a $1 each! Nine plants for the price of one. Works for me!

you know what, tomorrow or next day, I will head on down to where I saw them and take a pic. I will post it here. I can only hope to be able to have them look as pretty once I grow them.

julianne,

Of course you can........I am really pleased with my dollar one from Lowes this week........Does your Lowes have a Perennial garden club?
This one did .........

The closer one to me didnt.............Yes they have cheapos, but watch when you get to the counter to pay.. They always try to give you the original price, not the sale price.........
This one did this week.........Lady went back and checked and I went with her and showed her where it was..

Watch when they write it up.
