Here is a link to a nice thread on an assortment of raised beds from The Garden Helper's archive.

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.

My friends mom was in a wheelchair. Before her accident she was a h8uge home gardener, veggies and the such. I never understood why they didnt build her 'window box' type planters that could hang on the inside of her deck rails so she could grow a few things again.

You'd be amazed what you can grow in even shallow ordinary windowboxes set up on a porch rail! Maxi did all kinds of flowers. He did leaf lettuce, radishes, scallions, etc. Any crop that didn't need a big depth to grow.

I did leaf lettuce in a windowbox at my last house. Worked great.

Maxi just used the plastic 5 or 6 inch deep kind and they were fine. Someone who has those really deep boxes could probably even do beets and carrots.

Thats what I used. Not really a window box like a wooden built in one. But the same shape in plastic. I have it on my mailbox post now with flowers.
