Although these upside down cherry tomatoes were not listed in Vertical Gardening, Lynne/Pots 'n Plants brought them to my attention a few years ago. My son and I tried them the summer of 2006 and were VERY successful!

However, we did not take care to put them on pulleys and once he went away to summer camp, I could not reach them for watering and had to rely on kids in our neighborhood and friends to do it for me. Because of our porch railing we would need a pulley to raise and lower the heavy buckets but if there was no railing to get in the way, these could be hung low enough for reachability from a wheelchair and still give you enough clearance from the ground.

I will try to find links to the original thread Lynne gave us about them as well as some threads done by other members over in archives. These are COOL and rather worthwhile.

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?

There are long handled nozzles, upwards of 3 feet long, that you can attatch to a garden hose whwich greatly increases your reach. They may have been long enough for you to reach from a lower position.

I think I have seen those someplace, Wrennie! That is an excellent idea too!

Our little porch garden was watered by hand because our apt has no water faucet outside, but a place with a hose could do really well with an extension. I wonder if I can scrounge up a photo of one to show?

Great link, Wrennie, thanks!

I know there is also a type of hose that can be attached to the kitchen sink for people who don't have outdoor spigots.... maybe something like that would also be a worthwhile investment for our porch garden.

I had ones of those.....**wondering if i still do somewhere**... it tended to be a bit leaky at the faucet. But if you keep the end in a drip loop in the sink its fine

Used with fish tanks, let me see, how to describe......
a picture is worth 1000 words right
here drip loop on fish tank set up
It is so, if water follows the power cord it will stay at the bottom of the loop, unable to climb back up to the outlet.
In the sink hose, attatch at faucet, be sure that same sort of U is in the sink so a drip wont follow it over the sink edge and flood the floor.

Here's a link to a discussion about whether or not beefsteak tomatoes should be tried upside down...

Merme & Maxi's Porch Garden

We did two big pots of upside down cherry tomatoes and they did very well.
