Hey, Everyone . . . I am sooooo new to vegetable gardening, I should be sucking my thumb! Living in the Northeast is terrible for gardening because our winters seem to be 9 months long. Luckily, wintering has not gotten below 32 degrees more than 30-45 days for the past two years. With our terrible "greenhousing" going on, you would think I'd have a green thumb weighing 200 lbs. Not so.

That is me, and it was July 5th. We can't even ripen tomatoes on a plant here.

wrennie and afgreyparrot .....

ok...quit kidding around now...i'm gettin' a-scared! I saw that inexpensive weed killer is 1 gallon pickling white vinegar, one ounce pure orange oil, and a tsp of dish liquid kills most weeds and has an active life of about 48 hours. Does that sound ok for organic veggies or am I just kidding myself? kat

Just use straight white vinegar. dont get it on plants you dont want to kill.

I use boiling water to kill any stubborn weeds around the yard (like the curly dock). It works surprisingly well, you just have to be a little patient (a given if you garden without chemicals) because if you just dump the whole pot on it will run off and kill something else nearby,I pour it on a cup at a time so the heat soaks down and gets the root.
I especially like to use my leftover water from cooking veggies because it is full of vitamins and minerals.
I think the vinegar is also a good.
And if you want to stop them before they get out of hand the best thing is to lay down cardboard or newspaper(not the colored stuff) because it also is beneficial after it decomposes.
Good luck!

Organic weed killer is a mix of white vinegar, salt and dishsoap.
