I noticed there were some missing peaches from my tree last night. Aha! The critters are eating them, they must be perfectly ripe. So we went and got what the birds, deer, raccoons, bear etc hadn't. Then BF figured we may as well pick some pears too.

The wildlife get more of the fruit than i usually do. The neighbor used to own my house. He's a fruit tree addict. He has some nuts too. Uh, Nut trees too. I will guesstgimate between his propert and mine there must be 100 trees for fruit & nuts.

Dont plant pears from seeds- buy a grafted tree. The pear will not come out true to form from seeds. See this post:

I never like the taste or texture of a pear. why

Mark look for a tree now. Lots of our garden centers have them on sale now so they dont have to overwinter them.

Fall is a great time to plant fruit trees! Wrennie do you pick pears when they are ripe on the trees? The secret to European pears is to pick them when they are still green but just starting to turn there ripening color, and let them counter ripen (off the tree) If you let them mature on the tree they become astringent, and sometimes bitter. Also not all pears are the same, some are grainy some are smooth, some are buttery, some are sugary sweet!

We pick them before theyre ripe, just turning. If we dont Yogi and Bambi eat them all. I guess every one i ate was the grainy kind. Still dont like the flavor.
