Hello all!

Just as the subject line states...I have a play area that I built for my kids (We are about 20 miles southeast of Raleigh, NC) and the play area was filled with mulch. (Its 30 feet by 20 feet, and the mulch is maybe 4-5 inches deep.)

weeds KEEP GERMINATING and growing IN THE MULCH! Its your good ol' fashioned wood chips and the like.

I put down roofing paper under the mulch to prevent anything from coming up through the soil.

I'm hesitant to spray with weed killer, since my kids play there...so...uh...any ideas?

Many Thanks,

C. Felix

Hello and Welcome to the Garden Helper! wavy

Get a liter spray bottle and fill it with........

4 cups white vinegar
1/4 cup salt
2 teaspoons of Dish washing Liquid( lemon Joy is good to use

This will eliminate them for a while but they will grow back eventually.

Sounds like pulling is going to be the order of the day. The nice thing about that is they should come up really easily.
Vinegar can be sprayed on them without harming the children. You might even be able to get the kids to do it if they are old enough. The smell goes away and leaves an even fresher smell behind.

Hello;
I fell your frustration, been there, done that. "first" weed seed are
always in mulch,no if ands or buts. My advice is hand pull all the
weeds and apply "Preen". It will prevent the weed seeds from germanating,
but you stated you children play in the area to be treated, and I'am not
sure about the dangers with this,I would check first if you decide to
use it.

Good Luck
Donnie
