Hi, all. I've got a poser here.
I live in NY State, ~100 miles north of NYC. My yard is definitely more habitat than lawn, so all sorts of stuff pops up that I leave to grow and wonder about. Also, we own some property in Arizona (that we were supposed to move to this summer, but that fell through (argh!!!) and I have been bringing back seeds from there for the past 2 years. SO... this is either a native of Rhinebeck, NY or Ash Fork, AZ. The closest I can come is the Malvaceae (mallow) family. Genus?? Species??? Common name? Anything?

The flower is open for only a few hours in the late morning to early afternoon.

The seed pods remain inside this covering, under which is a pod-like thing - dry, not like a ground cherry, until they ripen and are small (1/2 grain of rice) and black

Your mystery plant looks like Venice Mallow...Hibiscus trionum...also known as flower-of-an-hour.

I love the sweet scents wafting in the breeze. I stop to admire the vibrant colors of all living things. And people think me odd. Then ODD I am!!!
