Have you Googled the House Rabbit Society?
Is this your first rabbit?
I wouldn't have known how to take care of the stray rabbit I found if it hadn't been for the website.

I will check out that website. Thanks!

This is my 2nd rabbit. I had a Dutch rabbit as a child but so much has changed in caring for rabbits since then! At that time rabbit pellets were the main part of the diet. I don't think my rabbit ever got any hay! He did get fresh vegetables, however.

I now have a 4-6 month old neutered male dwarf rabbit. He may be an English spot or a mix I'm not sure. He is a house rabbit (like my first rabbit). I think I have been giving him too many fresh vegetables for his size, however. He has been refusing his parsley & celery lately. He will accept carrots, broccoli, & lettuce. I was trying to feed him just vegetables & hay, but he seems to really want his pellets (bunny junk food?).

What kind of pellets? They need to be timothy, not alfalfa. And timothy hay not alfalfa. NO treats such as rabbit yogurt chips !
The lettuce is only dark Romaine types, right?
Only one or two baby carrots a week, because of the sugar. He is still young enough to be trained to a lifelong healthy diet. Only one inch slice of banana once or twice a week.
Mine is a boy, and he's a dwarf French hotot. A threatened breed. But I never knew that until I uploaded his picture to the HRS.
Would you like to PM me and trade email addresses?

I'm using Kaytee timothy complete pellets & Kaytee timothy hay. I also bought him some Kaytee orchard grass but he doesn't seem to like it all that much. I didn't buy him any treats at the pet store because I didn't like the ingredients. I knew they wouldn't be good for him. I did get him some Super Pet apple twigs to chew on, however.

I'm currently giving him green leaf lettuce & was going to get him some red leaf lettuce when he runs out.

Oops! I've been giving him a whole carrot or 3 baby carrots every evening! I also gave him a small slice of nectarine & apple just once last week. I haven't given him any banana.

I never heard of a dwarf French hotot. How can he be threatened? No one is breeding them anymore?

How do I PM you?

You click on my name in my post and when the menu drops down you'll see where it says "Send a PM".
Rabs LOVE banana, and I give a bit of apple too. It's the sugars that we need to limit.
I've never heard of apple twig treats.
I'm glad that the pellets are and hay are timothy !
How big a cage does he have? I have a puppy pen that's about 6 feet or more wide. He can't run loose in the house because I have a cat and because the one time I let him out (with her in my bedroom) he was scared and hid. He's content with his yard/house.

I sent you a PM. Thanks for the info!

Apple twig treats are just twigs from an apple tree. Small branches cut up I guess. My rabbit likes to chew on the bark.

He has a Super Pet My First Home extra large. It's 40 1/2" L x 18" W x 20 1/2" W. I also have 2 puppy pens that I can put together with clamps. My rabbit probably won't ever have free run of the house either. I have 2 dogs & a cat (in addition to 3 fish tanks...2 are empty at present but will be full real soon!).

I just recently read (in a rabbit magazine from the pet store or in a library book) how best to introduce rabbits to your other pets. I remember it mentioned a bit about cats & rabbits. I can look it up & let you know if you would like. I don't think I want to do all the rabbit proofing that would be required to let my rabbit have free rein of the house!

My cat seems to have mixed emotions about my rabbit. When he's in his pen, she puts a gentle paw through the bars to feel him. And she gets beside the pen and rolls on her tummy, wanting to play.
BUT when I put him on my bed and sit right there at the ready, she licks her lips and gets "that look".
So the large pen it is !
But I do let Saltflower out for petting and hugging time.

Bunnys love young fruit tree bark. Thats why those white plastic things are around the base of fruit trees when you get them to plant. So Thumper doesnt eat all the young bark off the trunk and kill the tree.

I didn't know that about the white collars around trees-that they're for nibbling protection.
Gee, that's so obvious but I never thought about it.

I didn't know that they even had white collars around fruit trees! I've never planted one.

I've had several animals in the past including hamsters, gerbils, & guinea pigs. I used to buy those colored chew sticks that they have in the pet stores, but my animals never seemed interested in them. I found the apple twigs & bought them because I figured natural is always better. Success! My rabbit loves them.

I've never seen the apple twigs here.
Saltflower has a ball made of Tinker Toys that has an almond in the middle. They can't have nuts so as he gets closer to the inside I'll throw it out and get him another one.
He also has wooden carrots colored with vegetable coloring.
I can't find a plastic Slinky anywhere ! Just the metal ones, but I don't want him chewing on metal.

Give 'em chocolate. Rabbits like Chocolate. My male black lop-eared, Two Bean Bags just discovered that he likes grapes. and after trying them, found he likes carrots after all. He is becfoming friends with my daughters Chihuahua and our NEW Catahoula Leopard dog puppy, Lucky. Lucky wants to play but Two Beans and MiMi, The Chihuahua like to snuggle and nap together.

Chocolate is highly toxic and sugars can cause fatalities from enterotoxemia, a toxic overgrowth of "bad" bacteria in the intestinal tract.
The same goes for breads, cereals, and ALL packaged treats sold for rabbits.
I'm quoting my vet and The House Rabbit Society.

Oops! My bad. Hasn't hurt Two Beans as far as I know but I'll stop with it. From now on I'll give him gravel and sticks as treats.
