Yesterday I went to a workshop on Grafting. We got to Graft an apple scion & used the whip & tongue method. The conditions were bad as far as lighting goes. When I got home I took the graft apart & redid my whip & tongue grafting. I had a piece of special tree tap to wrap around the surgery. But I don't have the special black goop to put on the tap. I went & used an asphalt type of tar to put on top of the tap to hold the moisture in. I am wondering if that was a good idea. It is not touching any of the plant & is just on top of the tap. I can easily remove the tar with WD 40. I have been thinking of removing the tar like substance & dripping bee's wax from a candle was over the tapped area. Any ideas about the tar or bee's wax would be appreciated. I also have canners wax. I have the tree potted for now. It has to have 60 degree temps to get the scion to leaf out.

It looks like I will have to answer my own question. I did have success using the asphalt tar it worked on top of the tape. I was successful with one of my apple tree grafts. The other one I had to redo & don't know for sure if it will take? I used a bee's wax candle wax to cover the tape this time. Not so messy. I am hoping with my second attempt to get a flowering grab sucker to start on the root stock.
