I have a rubber plant, approximately 4 ft. high. All of the branches have wilted leaves, they just hang downward.

I thought it needed more water so did that, then cut back on water, didn't help, now I don't know what to do.

Can someone help my poor plant? I want to try to save it, don't want to throw it away. It just looks pathetic.

Have you moved it lately? They are very tempermental and drop leaves super fast until the acclimate.

How often do you normally water it? Is it inside right now or outside? I put mine outside in full shade in the summer and it really perks it up a lot!

Wilting/droopy leaves of your rubber tree is a sure sign that the plant needs a drink of water. Soak the plant in a bowl of tepid water for about an hour or so to allow the rootball to become thoroughly saturated; then let the plant drain completely. With it's broad leaves, the plant will need lots of water. Let the top 3 inches of soil becomes dry between watering.

In addition to water, I'd think about the same old suspects of:

feeding - is it undernourished?
Light - is it in the right spot?
Pot - does it need repotting?
Temperature - too hot/cold?

Decided to tackle the rubber plant with soaking the root ball. What the heck, it couldn't look any worse than it does now.

Removed the pot and wow, there is this white moldy looking stuff. Does anyone think it can be saved or should I just chuck it?

Wilted leaves, moldy soil ... doesnt sound good! You could throw away all the soil (but, obviously, don't put it on your compost heap) and carefully clean and prune the roots and re-pot in sterile soil. But I wonder if its worth the risk of possibly infecting all your other plants? Send it to Room 101!
