Nothing to update just yet, Wendy. Don was in Puerto Rico for work all week, and is now taking Amy to get her flute fixed before the show she's in starts tonight. I imagine he'll do a bunch of work on it when he gets home... IF he can stand the heat - it's supposed to be up in the 90's again today - YUCK!
Are you going to plant grasses and stuff around it???? Benches? Figured all that stuff out yet? I guess that you probably won't be planting around it until next year right?
Oh, loz... you have NOOOOOOO idea how I am itching to plant and place around the pond!!! I have MANY plants waiting to be planted there, an adirondack chair, ottoman and table waiting to be assembled and placed there, an iron arbor bench waiting to be moved over there, 2 gargoyle statues still in their bags, citronella candle stakes waiting to stand out there, ohhhh, and some very nice, tall variegated grass like you have that is growing in other places for now, etc, etc, etc...
That's the fun part, decorating around the pond!!!! I might get another bench for mine---they are on clearance now. And next year I want Mark to build an arbor over the pond.
Thanks Wrennie, loz and Wendy! Once again, Wendy, you crack me up!!!
Oh.... can you see the glow from Don's back? He got soooooo sunburned on Sunday that it is glowing red! He hasn't slept for 2 nights now, tossing and turning everytime he lands on his back - so I haven't slept much either!
WOOOOOAH did it ever RAIN this morning from 2:30 to about 7!!!
They said on the news that we got about 2-3 inches an hour - that's a LOT of rain! So, the pond is fuller than ever, and Don's pump broke the last time he used it - of course he smashed it to smithereens then, out of frustration!!!
Thanks, tamara, Christy, and Wendy. I hope it ends up as well as you all are predicting!
Yep, Wendy - that's about how Don's back looks, but with tears instead of gritted teeth! Though with this rain, I'm sure it will be more like that pretty soon!
Lynn, that looks so great! So, how DO you keep from buying out the nearest nursery?! You - are - going - to - have - so - much - fun! I'm sure you're slathering Don with lots of love, attention and aloe. ;~D
I actually have a lot of plants just waiting to be moved alongside the pond - some that need to be divided badly, others that will go there in 1 piece, still others on my driveway still in pots! I am chomping at the bit to get out there and fill it all in! I have to wait til Don finishes the pond and can help me dig out the gardens - afterall... they don't call this Rockland County for nothing! The soil is very hard clay and there are rocks and boulders in it everywhere!!! We have bags of "town donated" compost to mix in, once he gets it all dug out too. I hope I get to do at least some of it before the weather turns this fall!
This is sooooooooo [color:#FF0000] NOT a good day for our pond today!
Firstly... we've had very heavy rains a few times this past week, and the entire front of the top of the pond fell into the bottom with the rainwater. All the rocks that Don painstakingly placed jigsaw puzzle like, plus some of the dirt behind them! The entire front ledge of rocks is gone!
Can you barely see the rocks under all that water???
(again, these pictures were taken through the screen window upstairs)
And then... to top it off... 2 of the large , that I've had for about 3 years now from my small bathtub pond, up and DIED on me this morning! They were about 5 inches long, and I was anxiously awaiting the time that I could put them out in the pond. I do have to admit that I wasn't keeping the tank as clean as I could have been, because I really thought they'd be outside by now. My bad...
I didn't know that one could borrow a pump from the firestation - I'll mention it to Don - thanks tamara! He definitely is going to need to pump all that rainwater out - he still has all the electrical hook-ups to make, so that would be pretty dangerous! Christy - it wasn't the pond pump that broke - it was a small pump that he uses to pump out water wherever he needs to...
He's mowing the lawn right now, before he tries to attack all those issues. His back is itching, but I haven't had a chance to look and see if it's peeling from that bad sunburn last week - I've been running around with my daughter all week at night - she's in a show - and haven't really seen Don much. Let's hope he's wiser today about the sun!
Don apparently fixed his little pump - I thought it was worse off than it was... So he's pumping out the water now, and tanning his front to match his back while he waits!
It must be drained now... I can hear him throwing rocks out of the pond!
Ohhhhh mann Lynne all that hard work and mother nature makes a mudslide on one end Don is quite the guy to get right back at it again ,awwww Bless his heart. ANd sorry about your fish too
Well lets hope he doesn't get his front side burned as bad as his back was, Did you make sure he had sunscreen on? ..
Still~ in all the work Don is putting into it this , it is going to be one awesome pond!!
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
I nominate Don ~~~ "Don of the Pond". Any guy having done that much backbreaking and backburning work, just to have to redo it and STILL gets right back to it has got to have patience, stick-to-itivness, and a title to show for it; not to mention a showpiece once it's done and you've preformed your landscaping majic.
Don of the Pond! Long may he...relax by the pond? ...bask in glory? ...reap the rewards of his labors? ...have a beer?
He worked on the pond ALLLLLLLL day long yesterday and I left him working on it at 6:45p.m. He went back out this morning at around 10, after having gone to the nursery to get some special tape for the liner.
He is ONE DETERMINED person when he has his mind set on a project!!! All the rocks in the foreground had already been meticulously placed around the front edge before the slide - can you say "round two"?
so sorry "don of the pond"! ok, the good news is it happened now and not after alot MORE work was done on it! at least with all that rain now, the rocks will settle (at the bottom ) and he can tell what needs to be touched up where! my little waterfall and stream that i put in back in march is still settling.
Thanks once again all - you all are the BEST cheering squad!!!
After much work over the weekend, the front wall is back up and finished! Don really wants to put water in the pond to help stabilize it, but doesn't have the time during the week to do that. He wants it filled before we get hit with more rain!
Here it is, as he's finishing up late yesterday...
Oh... I forgot to mention that he had bought a special saw to cut rocks - I tell you, the man is driven when he's working on a project!!!
