I have a banana tree that is several years old. It has never produced bananas. However, a few days ago my husband noticed a red thingy hanging under one of the leaves. Is this the banana? If so is it edible? How long before I can pick it?

It depends on the type of banana you have. Musa basjoo or hardy banana and other ornamental bananas like red banana will often produce a strange looking fruit, but they are not edible.
