I'm on a coleus kick lately! Can't explain it - with the new varieties, there are sooooooo many different shades and shapes these days, and most are now more [color:#CC33CC]PINKISH or even a rusty color, than red !
Actually, the very first houseplant that I grew on my own, was a coleus. In those days, there was only 1 type on the market where I lived. I was a freshman in college, and there was an upperclass girl living on my floor in the dorm whose room was FULLLLLLLLL of this coleus plant. I shyly asked her if I could have a small cutting - she gave me ONE LEAF!!! Wellllllll.... from that 1 leaf, I grew a wonderful plant, which then became several plants, and from that my dad had some for my parents' house, and on and on and on...
So... here I am today, with all these wonderful new varieties! Two local tiny nurseries have end of the year sales going on, and I got these in 6 packs the past 2 days for a great deal. The first one is the only one that I've had since the beginning of this summer and was in a 3 inch pot - it is a trailing, smaller leaved variety.
(p.s. - if you want fuller plants, pinch off the flower stalks when they first grow - the flowers really are insignificant, and the plant will thank you for it!)
Verry Pretty Lynne!! I really like the last one in your first post and all the ones in your second! Goooood Deal you got!!! One Question Do they over winter???
"Grace without perfection is more to be desired than perfection without grace."
Wheres my camera!!I have one that was a broken branch from the ones Dave planted last year. It looks just like your second pic. Theres was also a lime green one but that one didnt survive the winter in my house. I'm going to go take a pic of the planter in fromt of his shop. ***zip***
I absolutely love coleus, but I've never had luck growing them or propagating them or taking cuttings. I think I've bought transplants of coleus 3 or 4 times this year and not one survived lol

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee
Terrific, Wrennie! Have you been pinching the first one back to get it to be that full?
I hadn't ever seen a trailing one like my first picture either before, and they only had that one so I grabbed it. It's been very slow growing, but I just moved it a little bit on the front porch, so we'll see what happens.
I took some other pictures last evening, of my limelight ones, but they didn't come out very well. Will take some more today.
Its been unintentionally pinched. When it broke off its mother plant, pinch #1,when I stuck it in the soil and accidentally broke a branch, pinch #2. The dark red one in my border garden needs a opinch. Its very upright. The other one like it is branched and looks much better. Time to pinch and plant the pinching.
I finally got some decent shots of my limelight coleus - the color is hard to photograph. These plants are all from the same 6-pack. The first 3 are in mostly shade under my large white birch tree, therefore the darker coloring, and the second batch is out in front of my mailbox up by the street and gets full sun til about 1p.m.
You can see that these are a bit "bleached out" by the sun:
I just recently discovered coleus on my last trip to the nursery. I was looking for something that was more of a leafy plant to fill in the side of my garden area and they had the prettiest coleus and they had a variety that is for sun. Well, ever since my neighbor cut down her big tree, that part of my yard isn't so shaded anymore, I'm actually kind of suprised that my hostas are doing okay over there. Anyway, I thought they were so pretty and had to have some so I bought 3. I haven't had a chance to upload pics in a couple weeks but I'm hoping that I'll have some time this weekend.
I have a Kong rose coleus. However, I think it was attacked by some kind of bugs or the heat over took it. It became wilted and now it is bare. It is showing some new leave growth, however. I just pray that it comes back. If anyone has any advice at all please help me. My grandmother told me to take Dawn/water mixture (just a few drops of DAwn) and spray it every other day to help it. Earlier this summer I did notice green aphids on it so I started spraying this mixture on it but it didn't wilt until we had a mini-heat wave. Also I put it out in the rain (it is in a container with holes on the bottom)and the water was standing in the pot, would that have wilted it? I love my coleus.
I also have a "Pink Chaos" coleus that is still doing wonderfully. I just recently purchased a couple of Pack Sun coleus and a green with white stripe in the middle of the leaf.
I plan on bringing these inside with me when the cooler weather hits. Any advice when I should bring them in and any particular way I need to bring them in for winter?
Those are very pretty Carla! I am going to bring mine inside this week, now that the weather has gotten back to normal temperatures after being in the mid 80's - very bazaare for October! I plan on squirting them with soapy water - dish washing soap - not detergent - I use JOY. I already took some cuttings of one of mine that was getting too tall and leggy today. I am rooting those in a jar indoors - they are so easy to root!
