My 2009 Giant Vegetable Garden in New Jersey

For 2009 I focused on growing different races of tropical corn and different large amaranths. I also grew some sunflowers, zucca gourds, and giant english vegetable marrows.

Here is a listing of the heights of corn for this year
Tehua - 25 feet 2 inches
Tehua - 24 feet 6 inches
Uchima - 23 feet 2 inches
Olotillo-Tuxpeno - 22 feet 3 inches.
Uchima - 22 feet 3 inches
Olotillo-Tuxpeno 21 feet 1 inch
Montana 20 feet 11 inches
Uchima 20 feet 2 inches
Olotillo-Tuxpeno 19 feet 11 inches
Montana 19 feet 5 inches
Olotillo-Tuxpeno 19 feet 2 inches
Uchima 19 feet

I also did well with my giant amaranths this year. I still have some more to measure.
Amaranthus australis 24 feet 4 inches
Amaranthus hybridus X Amaranthus australis 22 feet
Amaranthus hybridus X Amaranthus australis 22 feet
Amaranthus australis 21 feet 1 inch
Amaranthus cannabinus X Amaranthus australis 20 feet 10 inches
Amaranthus cannabinus X Amaranthus australis (self-sown) 20 feet 1 inch
Amaranthus hybridus 19 feet 2 inches

How do I grow plants that all? The secret is finding the biggest varities of each species. Most of my work is doing research on the internet. I read through countless scientific articles, newspaper stories about someone growing a giant sunflower or such.

No, I didn't get a record this year.
World record for corn is 31 feet.
World record for amaranth is now 27 feet 10 inches.

I hope do even better next year now that I know exactly what types to grow large. I only had three Tehua maize plants that made it this year. Next year I plan on the bulk of my plantings to be tehua.
