I've heard that same thing when I worked at the Health Department. People would come in and want us to buy it for them. Our answer was always stop smoking for 2 days and use that money for the shampoo. Amazingly the people who asked were always smokers.

sheri, and all, if you are squeamish about lice, quit reading now.

when we lived overseas, in the tropics, we had a child (12ish) visit us. she had the most beautiful straight black hair hanging to her waist. you could see the lice from across the room. she was clean and well groomed, but her family didn't know that lice were treatable. and they were educated (college grads) i had to have a friend who spoke the language explain. and it took 2 whole bottles of the shampoo to do her hair. and 3 hours with the nit comb. if she had been my child, the hair would have been cut.

I'll bet it was driving her crazy with the itching. Poor child.

I am NOT complaining about this job, believe me. I LOVE this job. I'm just amazed at the things teachers send the kids to the sick room for. As you can tell by this post I can't get over it. Today a teacher sent a 5th grade boy who was bigger than me to see me because he had an ant bite that was the size of the top of a straight pin on his leg. No joke. Are the teachers nuts or are we raising a bunch of panty waist kids? And another big boy, 4th grade, almost as big as me came because he had scratched his lip with his own fingernail. I couldn't even see the scratch. The boys don't admit that they were pitching a fit to come but if they weren't how would the teacher know they had these tiny problems?

then it's probably the teachers. Schools on the other side of my county don't have this situation. Like I've said this is considered an at risk school and the population is different than the other side of the tracks.

Sheri, I think it's the school dist's and the lawsuits. I've tried to send my kids with a band aid to school when they had a wee little blister from a new pair of shoes and they'd tell me 'if my teacher see's it she'll send me to the nurse'. amazes me! I just tell them try to do it at recess so she won't see. I'm with you, why take up a nurses time with a band aid. even a kindergartener can change a band aid???

Cricket, it's not so much my time except for the fact that I don't even have time to call the parents to get pertinent info on student with real health issues because of these nonsense problems but it's the time these students are spending out of class. I saw so many students yesterday that the wait time was 15 to 20 minutes. So if it takes them a few minutes to get to the health room, then back to class, 15 minutes waiting then 10-20 minutes with me - that's too much time out of class for nothing but loose tooth.

And you'd think the teacher could figure out what's going on. When you have 2 students from the same class wanting to see the nurse because their gums are hurting is that a coincidence?

I rode in the ambulance to the ER today around noon with a student who was seizing and when I got back there were 6 students just waiting in the office for me. I have no idea how long they'd been there or what they were there for. I walked in and told them that if they weren't dying or bleeding to death to go back to class. They ALL left and didn't come back.

I do have to tell you this though. A mother was raising cane in the hall this morning because as she put it "That principal made me have to walk my daughter to school in this pouring rain." The story is that she called the school saying she had over slept and missed the bus and wanted someone from the office to come pick up her daughter. But of course, the responsibility wasn't hers, it was the principal's for refusing to send someone with a car. That struck me as funny and I laughed out loud which made her even madder.

I forgot to mention that the student who was seizing that we took to the ER in the ambulance - once the principal finally got in touch with the mom she had to threaten to call DSS to get the mom to come to the hospital to pick up her daughter.

I just got great news. I've been working 7 - 3 but I'm supposed to be leaving at 2:30. It just keeps getting better.
