The new used computer that I was given has an eithernet connection but no modem. Can I get an external modem for it or is there such a thing?

yes and yes. but an internal modem would be cheaper. if i know what kind you had, i might even have a modem laying around i could send you.

I found them online that are external that only cost 25.00 plus shipping I think I can do that with my august payday. Thank you so much for your willingness to share. That is so sweet. The last time I had to add boards to a computer I had to open the back 3 times before I got it right and my fingers were a lot thinner then. So I like the idea of an external for this purpose.

Trust me, internal will be faster as it'll communicate directly with your motherboard (and no via Serial, Paralell, USB, or FireWire); www.newegg.com is yoru best bet for buying components, they're actually one of the only sites I buy stuff from; and that modem will only cost you $9 or so there.

Installing it is easy, power down the computer, pop of the side of the case (you'll need a phillips screwdriver) slide the pci card into an open slot (pci are white, isa are black) screw it in, pop the case on, then power it up. It'll go in snug, theres no worry about putting it in properly as it'll only fit in one area and will fill the entire slot on the motherboard.
