If any of you want to send Maxi a postcard or regular card while he is at camp over the next few weeks, PM me and I will give you his mailing address. Mail is VERY important to these campers!
If you send him a note, remember he still reads printing better than cursive, and he knows most of you by your screen names, although some of you he knows by both.

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart? The other heart was given to another for us to find.

Mail Call is a big event for the campers because they are without TVs, stereos, electronic games, phones, etc throughout their stay. I know Maxi always looks forward to it!
Thank you all.

I remember when was in 6th grade, we went to Outdoor school for a week and stayed in Cabins.....it was just a week, but getting mail was super exciting! I still have the letter in my scrapbook that I wrote to mom and dad. They gave it to me to keep safe.
Your Outdoor school sounds like it was great, Loz!
I know the kids who go to where Maxi is love it up there and many of them take the training to work there when they are older. Not only is it a very beautiful place in the woods on a huge lake, but oh my goodness, they have so many neat activities!
The only part Maxi doesn't like is the 3 PM "quiet hour" when everyone must return to their cabins and either rest or do quiet activities! He would rather keep right on playing! But I think the director is smart for insisting on it.

He can only call me IF someone takes him off campus and into town on Saturdays, which is visiting day. My girlfriend who lives only 5 miles from the camp is going to take him on an outing on the 12th and he'll call me then. She takes him out for a bit every year on one of the visiting days. The nearest town is a lively little beautiful coastal spot and there's plenty of things to do there, so he always has a blast in town as well.

Thought you'd all like to know I got a letter from Maxi. Normally, I am the very last person he writes to - 'coz I'm just Mom!
He was proud to announce that this year he chose the top bunk. That is a real First for him. Because of his tendancy to sleepwalk, he's never felt particularly safe in the top level.
He is delighted that he's been given the nickname "Maximum Prime" -- or at least, that is what I THINK it is. I'm never all too certain because of his creative spelling!
He also said he won something really big, but I can't figure out what!
Between the overnight tent camping, the rowboat adventures, and a comic book making class, it sounds like he is having a great week.

Re-reading his letter this morning, I figured out he won a Frizbee!
My kid and his unusual penmanship combined with creative spelling....

I've been getting the best little letters from Maxi the entire time he's been at camp. His correspondance is becoming as grown up as he is! But this afternoon I got a call from my friend Jane who saw him yesterday.
Jane lives near the camp and each year when he is there, she takes him out for one of the visiting days.
They bought burgers to go and took them down to the dirt beach in her town. It isn't a sandy beach at all, but has dirt and stones and many growing things. So they ate, and looked at all the various wildflowers and doodled around for quite some time at the shore.
Then they went to a bookstore so he could pick up the Star Wars book he's been hoping to get. And they went to another shop and got him the mood ring for his pinky that so many of the campers are sporting this year. Then they went to the library to research Eagles and Seaweed.
By that time, they were ready for dessert so they hit the ice cream stand where Maxi couldn't decide between two flavors, so she bought him a scoop of each.
Janie said she was so surprised by how much the kid has grown up this past year and also what a good reader he has become. She had him read to her of his new book while they were still at the beach. She also said he was as polite as can be, thanking her many times. He was surprised to find out that she likes to get mail throughout the year and not just during summer when he is at camp, so he said he would write to her this winter too.
So, my kid had a good day out and about!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww that brought me close to tears.. See how our world is full of wonderful people .. That was so sweet of max and your friend. God will bless her greatly. Merme
Today my friend Mindy and I go up to get Maci and bring him home. The worst of the t-storms have passed, but it is expected to be a rainy and windy day.
I can't wait to see the kid and hear all about his Great Adventures in the High Woods!
We are leaving at 9:30 and should be home by late afternoon.
I'm sure Maxi will want to stop in and say hi when he gets back. He wrote to me that he received cards from "Garden Helper Forum Friends".

At the end of the trip, we decided to make a "quick stop" at the grocery store because I was out of everything. As it turned out, the store was JAMMED with our summer visitors and just getting up and down the aisles we tried took lots longer. But we got the essentials.
Then, just as we pulled into our complex, a HUGE t-storm broke out and the rain was pelting down on Maxi as he manfully struggled to unload the car of our groceries, his camp gear, and my wheelchair. He got it done in short order and none the worse for the wear, it seems.
His big homecoming news was that he had a girlfriend for one week!
Julia had been at camp with him last year and this year they decided they really liked each other alot, so they were "boyfriend and girlfriend" for the week she was there. He assured me, though, they didn't get into any of that "lovely dovey stuff". They do not plan to keep in touch this winter, but will meet up again next summer.
So, he is busy getting a dose of video games and I am going to start the laundry and try to dig down through the pile tonight.
It is good to see him... he is tan and healthy looking!

To celebrate his Welcome Home, we ordered dinner from our Most Favorite Restaurant and was sorry to hear from the owners that they are selling the place! They've been doing backbreaking but wonderful work there for 15 years and have had enough, so they want out. It will be a great loss to our town and to the kid and I personally as they were the first people who welcomed us here when we first arrived.... a legally blind mom and her 10 month old son. The owners have kept pictures of Maxi on their walls throughout all these years and put on many birthday parties for him there.
So we had a great meal together, although Maxi was sad it will be one of the last, and then he went exploring in his room to find his beloved and very much missed toys.
He made me a pot of coffee and we are winding things down for the night.
