On a different thread Cricket asked for party ideas (cheap) for her tweens.
Here are a few,
Have the kids decorate with pumpkin carving.
Get white trash bags, string, markers and balled up newspaper and they can make ghosts to hang from trees.
White balloons and markers and they can draw blood shot eyeballs on them
Apple bobbing.
Naked cupcakes to decorate with frosting.
I am sure others will have more inexpensive ideas for you to keep those kids occupied.

We used to do Halloween parties when our kids were little and it is Carrie's birthday just before too so we usually combined the two- costume birthday party and Halloween party that night for kids and the neighborhood... we made ghost shaped sugar cookies... let kids decorate with red hots- and whatever other decor you can find at dollar store... we bought white long plastic table cloths.. glued leaves to edges for decor- had to buy fake ones then cause we lived in Az , leaves didn't turn pretty there... reused then too... I would google receipes for scary food stuff- I don't have all the stuff I used to do then been yrs... we did decorate the yard with fake graves and such- one yr our nighbor had a walkie talkie in the grave and took the other one and sat in the window watching when one of the kids got close he would talk to him ... of course we only did that with older kids-- we used a lot of jacko laterns- hay bales- we dressed up too- I made a witch outfit for myself and Joe had a sheik outfit and then another yr we did clowns... lots of different variations too- spider web stuff goes a long way... fake spiders attached... you can make bats and hang them too.

WE usually just made a bonfire out back and roasted hotdogs and marchmallows.

Inside on the stove was chili and crackers.

and apple dunking is fun and inexpensive.

My brother also rigged up anopening in a table and had one of the kids with make-up on. There was an Opaque cake cover over them--when somwone wanted a "treat" and they lifted ther lid, they would be greeted by a "howel".

now that was scary-fun.. but not for young kids.

had you thought of a Halloween Scavenger Hunt?? you could limit it tot the immediate neighbor hood, and tell neighbors about it in advance OR limit it to your yard and 'plant' things to be found.

holy smokes! Jonni13! I made one comment and you opened a great thread! (not just for me, but for others with the same question) way to go girl! if I had the energy and time I'd go to photo bucket and give you a gold star! I got one in there just for such an occasion.
that scavanger hunt thing sounds like loads of fun! bobbing for apples too. I'm still trying to sell the idea to the kids about having a party instead of trick or treating. they would have a blast! and less stress on me having to drive them from house to house. I also thought about some scarry movies if we have a couple of sleep overs. anyone have any ideas on pre teen....pg13-like....movies? I used to love the freddy cruder movies but I think those might be a little much for 8-11 yr olds. ha ha.

maybe a game where you dip your hand in some spagheti noodles or pudding and guess if it's brains or intestines....HAW HAW HAW......(that was my scary laugh)

Canned grapes make good eyeballs for the 'feel' thing, too.

Check walmart, last year they had a gingerbread house kit to decorate, but it was for halloween! The party I went to last year did one and it was sooooo cute!

Try musical chairs at the party..Lots of fun.
