Hey all--
This is the first year I've tried
growing blackeyes (or any other legumes other than standard green & wax beans). I have a question about the progression of plant growth.
I have blackeyes in two places. Two rows are in the ground in the veggie garden-- full sun, good dirt, etc. They've grown beautifully and have many many pods that are beginning to fill in and become very "bumpy". I also have five plants in a big pot that only gets intense afternoon sun. They, too have many pods. I first noticed that the bottom leaves of the plants in pots were starting to turn yellow. I didn't give it much thought, considering where they are and that their growth seemed to be slowing (fewer
flowers, fewer new shoots). But then I noticed that the plants in the garden are also starting to turn yellow. Nothing else to be said, they're just slowing turning yellow.
Since the same thing is happening in two completely different conditions, I don't think there's anything wrong, per se. There are no stress-related things going on, none of the plants are wilting in the heat of the day, no insects pestering them. What's happening with the blackeyes is the same thing that happens with the outer leaves of day lilies-- this time of year you expect things to start winding down. It's the shabby part of the season.
However, since I have no experience with blackeyes, I thought I'd better make sure. The sites and books I've checked give me plenty of information about how the peas and pods grow and mature, but none about how the plant themselves progress. If anyone knows if yellowing leaves are is typical or not, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!
