I potted a clematis vine in September on my patio (partial to no sun). Initially it grew like gangbusters, sprouting tendrils and growing about 4 inches/day. It was truly amazing. Then, all of a sudden, it stopped. Some of the leaves got little white spots which I sprayed with a mixture of water/alcohol/little dish soap liquid which took care of this problem. Now, some of the leaves look like they're being eaten, sprayed these which sort of fixed that problem. Most all the little bitty new leaves have now gotten brown and wilted and have died. It has pretty much stopped growing and I can't figure out what happened from the first few days after planting.

Clematis demand that their roots stay cool and moist. Being that you are in SoCal and your Clematis is growing in a pot, I would guess that be a major part of the problem.
