I thought I'd post all 3 of the winter pics of my pond here. The ice is THICK and the pump water is freezing now all around the top of it.....poor fish. I think they'll be fine though, it froze bad last year and they were ok. The deepest section is 3 feet and I keep balls floating in it too for more air space for gases to get out.

Getting cold.

Colder

OOOO it's really cold now!

Hard to believe there is a pond under all of that ice and snow. I swept the snow off today---it was only 25 degrees today though. It won't be unfreezing for a while.

oh my goodness Loz, is this normal?? does it freeze over like this every year??/

---is your pond deep enough to keep the fishies alive???

Oh when is spring getting here???

yes I know 57 days 12 hours & 47 minutes--bless Bill for the countdown--
there are days when that is what keeps me going.....

It froze hard like that last year and the fish were fine. They probably hate it though. The deepest part is 3 feet and that is supposed to be good enough for them to overwinter in the pond. I'm sure they are all in there swimming under the ice.

Fish can't be fed in the winter when it's cold or it would kill them so they will probably be happy for spring, and sun, and food!

They are tough hombres, those fish! Is that them you can see in the top photo, the orange bits?

We recently saw some huge goldfish at the Japanese gardens in the Melbourne zoo. These guys were probably about a foot long, but you need a big pond to get them to that size (and probably no freezing helps, too).

Yep, that is the fish that you can see. There are 10 of them in there. About 6 orange ones, 3 multicolored Shubunkins, and a white one.

The biggest one is about 6 inches long. When I bought it, it was only about an inch long.

Totally frozen the whole way around the top now! Like a big bubble.

Not too successful at breaking it up either.

It was still pumping water up inside the bubble a bit. But I fear that if it doesn't warm up soon it will just freeze up totally. I might look into getting a pond heater next winter. Maybe. But it is sort of cool all frozen over like that.

Having lived in England(I was young, but remember a lot), and I still have a ton of family there now....I must say that winters there are nowhere near as severe as they are here where we are now. When we moved here I couldn't get over the huge amounts of snow we'd get. It was great for a kid.

I used to turn my pumps off when it got to freezing when the pond was frozen over . Never lost any fish in the winter and like your pond mine was about 3 feet deep at most .
