I'm in zone 6b and I'm anxious to begin planting my bulbs and seeds for fall. The temperatures are starting to fall and the trees are starting to get a few red and yellow leaves and the branches are falling off of the ones that loose their leaves. (I am so from Washington State. I know about evergreens but these trees are new to me.)

So can I begin planting my crocuses, tulips and the rest or is it still to early? And if it is to early when should I be able to start?

I'm in zone 3/4 and we only plant the end of Sept. to the middle of October.

I plant around the same time as Tamara, though I usually plant no later than the first week of october, because the bulbs need to send out roots to anchor themselves in the dirt. Muscari sends out leaves after you plant them.

Hi wavy, I'm in zone 6b also and was wondering the same thing. I have some bulbs I want to transplant and I'm not sure if now is a good time or to wait a bit.

I'm trying to notice more of whats on the home page instead of just rushing to the forums. after I saw your question I took a peek at the home page. wouldn't it be cool if the 'monthly planner' (or whatever it's called?) contained info by zone as to what to plant by month? Is this do-able? could a simple data base with drop down boxes be added, or even a spread sheet be made on this?

Wow, Tammy you must be busy! I think the Callistemon viminalis is hardy to z9 or so, I'm not sure if it's going to survive your zone.

Hi Kenny,

Thanks for the heads up. Glad to have you back by the way.

Hi Suzydaze,

Is it cool enough to start planting it where you are? It's still getting in the 80's during the day here.

there is something like that on the main garden helper pages. but we will look at links to make it easier. i like the drop down idea thumbup but don't know what's involved in that.

in zone 6b, you can plant your spring bulbs any time up to the end of november/beginning of december if the weather is still warm enough. as long as the ground isn't frozen solid, you're good to go.

here in pa - chester county is the next county over from mine - it's still a bit too warm for planting the spring bulbs...hold off until at least the end of september (you don't want them sprouting and then the weather get really cold - especially if they are new bulbs).

in virginia, you may well be able to plant up until mid-december - depending what part of the state you're in.

Thank you Joclyn. that's good to know since I now have the flu and don't feel like doing anything but sitting here. And even that is pushing the limit.

Although it has cooled down it is certainly still warm enough to sprout plants so I'm going to take your advice and wait until at least the end of the month. Then I'll plant the bulbs and bring in the peppers to over winter in the house.
