After consulting with my fellow bird photographer hobgoblins at Birders World, I further refined the settings on my Canon and went out on the front porch this morning to try them out. About the only thing convenient was a male Cardinal, but being one of my FAVORITE birds to photograph, WHAT COULD BE BETTER?

Switching to his Crypt Keeper voice, Thorny says, "I call this little number, 'A Study in RED ' !

NORTHERN CARDINAL (MALE)

This camera is capable of MUCH BETTER detail and clarity. This is just my SECOND time to use it. I was 20 feet away from the Cardinal when I took these pictures.

Mine don't belong in a book, but one of my buddies (and one of the extraordinary photographers who are training me) does. He is in Canada and is worshipped on Birders World as a GOD!!! LOL. His name is Glenn Bartley. Google him up and take a look at his work. He is using a camera a little better than mine, but his lenses cost in the THOUSANDS of dollars, EACH!!!

Wow! Your buddy's pics or gorgeous! I gotta say though that for thousands of dollars more, those lenses aren't THAT MUCH better than yours. I guess it's all relative. If he had a bird book that sold for $100 and you had one that sold for $10, I'd buy yours.

I was shooting the Chickadees today. With my cheap canon.

Heres mom chickadee ready to kill me.
And baby chickadee learning to fly, she was talking to me. Actually I picked her up and put her back on the limb.
She looks like a cute lil penguin.

Baby Chickadee.......

What I meant was why would I spend $100 when I can get pictures just as nice and a lot more fun for $10? Unless I was some kind of photography elitist? That tells you I'm not much of the artsy-fartsy kind.

Just got in from a walk around the 20 acre church yard across the street from my house. Got pictures of Killdeer, Brown Thrashers, Eastern Kingbirds, and POSSIBLY a female Rose-Breasted Grosbeak. Also saw Indigo Buntings (no pics) and heard a House Wren singing. Also discovered a PEACH ORCHARD (wild) LOADED with PEACHES (that should be ripe in about a month).

They had me start out using automatic White Balance . They said if I were shooting stationary birds to use an ISO of 100-200. If the birds are moving or it's a cloudy day or bad lighting use an ISO of 400-500 They told me to try F STops of 4-5 and experiment from there. They said to play with and experiment with the camera to see what everything does.

I have a new Canon EOS Rebel my son bought me. Its an SLR camera and uses detachable lenses. Many of the controls are built into the LENSES rather than the camera Bodies themselves.

The Bus stop is 40 feet from my front door, about 8 feet from my mailbox. The bus picks me up and drops me off in my yard. I can ride ALL day for $2.50.

We don't have buses in Union County. We have to drive to the big city to ride the bus.

Maybe someday I'll have an F Stop and clean pictures. Pray for me.
