A lot has been cleaned up . . . there's a lot left, but at least all the grungy wet leaves are off my wee garden plots.

And I've been poking my soil back into shape.

I feel like I'm getting somewhere this time.

This spot here is a 'corner' where I usually grow whatever's happening from summer to summer . . . I've put three small kalanchoes in there - and some idunno's that seemed to be doing well - there were yellow sunflowers growing from inside the curbstone beside that patch - I've hawked them all up and put them inside the corner plot.

[Linked Image]

Here - I've done a 'crop', so you can see the little shoots coming up. I hope to be showing a big bunch soon.

I just got some good dark soil - I'm going to spread it in there tomorrow.

A fern - I'm going to have some fern!

My neighbour, two lots up, was weeding out his 'extras' last weekend - he saved some for me - here's a little fern I planted a week ago Saturday - it's about 6 inches high now.

Angel Corner - it has a bit of gout wort and some wild geranium - also, three shoots of asiatic lily have come up - a plant I had in there two years ago.

I decided it should have more sun that angel corner has . . .

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

I put them in the little plot across the walk from there . . .

Maybe it will look odd with three asiatic lilies around those violets. They're doing nicely - there's another one in the other corner of that island - I broke it by the root when I put it in - it's just crumbling. I'm going to turn it into the soil and hopefully there'll be some seeds.

This is farther down the lot - near the sidewalk - I had given up on this - hose doesn't reach it anyway, and it's just a few wild things I had going in there - also some periwinkle.

Jeff re-vamped it today - took out the old piece of wooden trellis that was there, and put in a bigger one - that gives it more room.

I dunno' what's going to happen -

I saved a few scrap saplings (whatever they are) and put them under the birch tree.

Another Sunrise

Earth moves into light, feathered creatures
utter the first birdspeak of the new day.
Cats uncurl themselves, exit
by whatever door has been opened

Sounds of people heading out, grasping
Monday morning in hand; some aware
of nothing more than time, some fully
conscious of the present moment.

PO-TEN-TIAL-ITY
in every breath drawn; anything
can happen, everything can fall
into ones hands, slip from the fingers.

We were born for this; each of us,
our names written in the stars,
different times, different places;
each will exit by a different door.

I've done quite a bit lately, but don't have a ny pics.

Today, I slaved - dug out around a tree root on the ground - replaced the soil with the kind you get from the mulched leaves - a good pail and half of it - took out all the sticks!

I planted some greens that grow wild in the so-called grass here - if it doesn't work, I might try some wild strawberry - we got lotsa' that.

I've added some to my journal at Wild City . . .

http://wildcity.proboards14.com/index.cgi?board=gardening&action=display&thread=3065

Here's what I was working on early this evening:

[Linked Image]

That's the BEFORE picture - before I started cleaning. I'd left a big flower pot full of scrub there over the winter and it magically became perfectly good dark soil!

So I spread it into the corner where I have the forsythia sprigs growing.

I'll be working on this tomorrow (I hope). I'll take more pictures then.

Jeff reached up to the tree at the side of the parking lot and got me a couple vases of lilacs . . .

lilacs.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/>

Now that feels good! A good dig, a good bath and a hairwash, lilacs and I'm going to see the movie I've been wanting . . .

Anna Karenina!

(We did a book discussion on that at the Barnes & Noble Board)

Some women feel good when they get a new hat - me? I always feel happy after a good DIG!

Dig! Dig! Dig!

I thinned out that variegated plant all along the side here, and transplanted into the next patch down, which up to today, didn't have anything in it other than one lonely bleeding heart.

Coleus

I re-potted most of it - mixed the existing soil with some used tea I saved. Trimmed them and used the cuttings - dipped them in hormone and put them in soil - they're 'under cover' right now. A plastic juice bottle . . .

I only had one bloom the other day and it was broken - now there's another. Looks like the broken one survived alright too.

This is one I bought the other day - it was one of those visits to Canadian Tire - Jeff getting a part for the showerhead - me, having no intention of buying plants whatsoever (wait till later in the month when they're much cheaper), in the garden section . . .

I don't know what this one is - lost the tag:

I saw some older ones up there today - they're really big. Hope they'll grow nicely in that sconce.

Bought these today (3 of them - one looks different). I didn't lose the tag, so I was sure I'd know what they are . . . just now I realized both tags say the same thing!

Carly, I think vivace is the french for perennial, as in Vivace herbacée

Helping the world one seed at a time

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee

I put the red salvia in tonight - dug out at the foot of the tree (on the far slope where there's lotsa' sun) - put the salvia in one side and some wildflower seed in the other.

I dunno' about the wildflower seed - they were 3/$100 . . . you know how it is with old seed you get from the dollar store - still, I like to try it.

This first picture is dark - took it a little late - there's lotsa' seed on that ground there - raked over it and spread it more evenly.

And the second is a closeup of the little plots I dug for the two lots of seeds.

Tonight, put the violets my neighbour just brought over behind the tree on the south island.

Also cleaned out part of the fence at the foot of the slope - put my 3/$1 seeds in there - the evening primrose, then the cut flower seeds.

I don't know how old they are - so, all pray to the goddess of dollar store seeds.

The thunder storm has started - just growling right now - I don't see any real rain yet.

We're supposed to get 15 mm over the next 24 hours.

We've had enough rain, methinks . . . thunderstorms all weekend - more to come later on today.

The ground's too wet now - some patches turned to mud! Jeff laid some stones to cut back on that - they'll also help to retain water.

There are some new plants, after that visit to the house that's being renovated - they're plowing the garden under, so I was given permission to take some plants - got 3 baskets of 'em!

That kept us busy for the rest of the day - had to work like mad to get them all transplanted.

I'm going to spread some grass seed in spots that need it, this morning, seeing as how it'll be getting soaked again later on.

And I'll take some pickies.

The landlords came to clear out that area where the tree limbs had fallen in the winter storms - finally! That was a relief . . . I retrieved some wild geranium that was growing in a box I had up against the fence there.

Just what I was looking for to complete Angel Corner . . . here's that corner with the few bits of gout wort in it . . .

[Linked Image]

I pulled that out and put it under one of the trees. Then added the new sprig of wild geranium . . .

Our thunderstorms seem to be over, but we're still having rain. This lot might be a bit messy still, but it's sure getting watered.

Today's work was just the mucky stuff - straining my soil out of my mulching square, physically moving the nice worms so they don't get chopped with my hand fork - got a really fat one today. That worm was short, but by golly, she was chubby - must have been 1/2 inch diameter.

Started North Island

Here is what we have to deal with, Skitter . . . one big ugly expanse of dried, compacted soil and weeds!

[Linked Image]

We started right here, and worked in an arc, parallel to the corner bed:

[Linked Image]

Weeding, lifting with the hand fork, raking out . . .

[Linked Image]

Then a layer of soil, followed by a mix of soil and grass seed:

[Linked Image]

We need to buy 5 more bags of soil, I figure . . . I hope to be able to do another few feet back tomorrow.
