I went for a check up 4/22 and got a call saying I'm hypothroid. She wants me to take synthroid. I've been checking online and have found a medicine made from animal hormones called Armour Thyroid. I would rather use that rather than a synthetic medicine but I don't know if my doctor will prescribe it. Does anyone know anything about it?

checking online usually Doctors of Osteopathy, holistic medicine, will prescribe it. Regular doctors don't.

is this other med made for use in humans? if not, then no doctor will prescribe it. if it is for humans, then any doctor (regardless of whether they are a d.o. or not) can prescribe it. if it does what the synthroid does, i don't see why your doc wouldn't prescribe it if that is what you want to use.

i know a few people who take the synthroid...it does just what it's supposed to and i've not heard anyone complain about side effects of any kind.

the majority of meds these days are synthetic in nature...so i wouldn't worry about it too much. plus synthroid has been around for quite a while. i'm always leary of the new meds (no track record and too many times things are rushed to market and then problems arise).

Armour Thyroid is made from pig thyroid hormones and isn't supposed to have the side effect of hair loss that some people experience with synthroid which is man made. This is what was used before synthroid.

My sister takes it too and hasn't had any problems. It's just bumbed me out since I just stopped taking that stupid chemotherapy medicine and was hoping to be off meds forever.

I take synthroid...have since 2002-ish. I haven't had any side effects from it at all. They did try the generic brand on me but it didn't work (or maybe that is vice versa...can't remember which one is the generic kind), so personally I wouldn't try anything other than the synthroid for fear of it not working and having to feel crappy again. ANYWAYS, like Jiffy said, I felt sooooooo much better once the thyroid was working correctly again. Not moody anymore....not tired all the time.

i lost 20 pounds when i first went on. but my weight stabilized. i get my levels checked every 3-6 months, and need to lose more weight, but the rest of the weight isn't the thyroid.

they haven't had to adjust my dose on over 2 years. and my weight has been fairly stable in that time. but i don't "work" at losing weight, so stable is good.
