Hello All,
I have just removed all sod from my bern and plan to plant hostas in this area that receives approximately 5 hrs of morning sun. I would love to add some colorful flowers as well. Any ideas for a hardy, long blooming flower for this spot. It will have to tolerate salt and sand in the winter from the plows. Look forward to your feedback. sincerely, gardenrevup.

Hostas do love the shade....but 5 hours of morning sun won't hurt them at all. We used to have hostas that got about 5 hours of afternoon sun and they did just fine. I loved those hostas!! :)

Bleeding heart may be able to handly the salt and sand but I am not totally sure about that. We have something around here that I have always called Tiger Lilies, but I do not know if that is what they are.....I know alot of people call them Ditch Lilies because in alot of areas they grow up in the ditches next to the road and they spread out as the years go by as well. They are pretty tough. Here is a picture of what they look like....I have seen them in orange and in yellow.

Ok....I found these lilies for sale on some online places. You have to do a Google search for "orange daylily" and you'll get the right plant. For some reason, the lilies that i had grew in multiple blooms...if you look in the picture I posted you'll see that the flower closest to the bottom of the picture is actually a triple bloom. I think I had some freak lilies. Also, I wanted to warn you that the pollen on these lilies do NOT agree with cats. If can kill them...I think it shuts down their liver or kidneys or something. We had these planted near the back door end of our garden and didn't have a problem with our cat and the lilies tho...i think because the lilies grow pretty tall. They were about 2 feet tall before the flower actually bloomed. Just some extra info for you. :)
