They weren't doing much yet, but they would have been a year old this summer.. will they still grow this summer? Right now they are just sticks sticking up out of the ground.

They are pretty hardy plants. I've cut mine back to ankle high sticks on purpose and they grow back to 10 ft tall shrubs. I would put something in the ground to protect them from future abuse though. A stake at the very least to mark the spot.

Hi Tina! And Enrique! Thanks! I am glad to hear they are pretty hardy.. I didn't want to have to buy new ones.. I will do something to keep him away from them. At least he didn't mow the lilac bush!

Some plants will come back with a vengence after being mowed over. Seems to put the energy back into the root system making for a stronger plant.

Butterfly bushes won't overwinter here. It's a shame because they are so pretty. What variety do you have Jennifer?

I am glad to hear they should be fine.. as far as the variety, I am not sure without looking at the picks in the ground. LOL I know one is blue/purple and one is pink.

Yikes!

My boyfriend's done things like that--which is why I insist upon mowing now--for the most part. LOL
