I have seen a sticky paste that can be used to catch crawling insects from getting up the trunk of trees etc. My questions are:

1) Can you make this up yourself?
2) Can I paint it directly onto the tree bark?

I don't know of a recipe, but there should be something you could mix. Tanglefoot is one product name...maybe if you Google that something will come up with ideas for making your own.
