Hello all!
I have a question about roses. I have a rose bush that has been neglected over the years from previous owners. I've taken a picture of it and I'm hoping this link will work.

Long story short, it's looking healthy but somehow just looks like a small bush with green and red leaves on it. One huge cane sticking out of it. I'm not sure if it's been damaged beyond repair or that's how it's suposed to look.

I've also enclosed my rose bush next to it. It's blooming well but has a red ring around the leaves. This bush has also battled black spot. I have no idea what types any of the bushes are.

Can anyone give me any insite?

new growth on roses is red - and the red color goes away after a while so, i wouldn't worry about the red rim on the leaves. if you look at the older leaves that are lower, you'll see that they've gone all green...

as for the other bush, you've got nice healthy new growth at the bottom and those canes should start growing taller as the weather gets nicer. you can trim that one cane back if you'd like. actually, it would probably be a good idea as the bush will have a more balanced look. you can take it down to 2 feet tall. pruning it back will help it to branch out a bit, too.

i transplanted a bunch of roses a few years ago...from the neighbors yard. she'd passed away and the family kept the house and rented it out. no one took care of the flower bed (it ran the length of the property and was absolutely beautiful at one time - flowers blooming from early spring to mid-fall).

then the granddaughter moved in (rented from her uncle). omg! she had a friend come and weed-whack the whole thing! it was bad enough that you couldn't see the pretty flowers anymore because of the weeds...i cried when i saw the results of the weed-whacking!

when i moved the roses, they grew just like that one for the first couple of years and had no flowers...then they TOOK OFF!! they're all doing really well now - 4 years later - and bloom like crazy all summer long.

so, have some patience. roses are very hardy and can survive neglect. they do take a little bit of time to respond to proper care, though. yours is already showing signs that it's being cared for properly...i'd give it a feeding now and again in late summer and next year i'll bet you'll see a ton of blooms on it!!

Joclyn,
Thank you so much for your insight. It has put my restless mind to rest. Patience isn't my best virtue but knowing my roses will eventually blossom I'll work on that. :-)
