My daughter was out in our pasture and found this.. I don't know what to think of it. It is whole and whatever is in it is still alive. She felt it moving around when she was holding it in her hand. Anyone??

Link to my photobucket account is further down in this post!

Hmm.. I don't know Bill.. seems odd a Sea Bird would be in our neck of the woods. And Courtney has found clam shells in the field before.. but never a whole clam.

So what do we do with it now???

LMBO Courtney just asked me if we can keep it!! She said it is her buddy!!

Do you have any rivers around? The gulls can certainly tote that size. I live in the desert a good hundred miles from the ocean and we get gulls here all of the time. Specially when the weather out to sea is bad. Gulls like to drop clams onto rocks to try to crack them open.

Well we don't have any big rivers around.. I mean not close.. but I suppose if you get them living in the desert it is certainly possible for us to have them too.. it just seems so funny. So what should I do with the thing??

Well, I wouldn't let it stay in the house. If there is a clam in there alive, it won't stay that way long. And they don't smell too nice when they die. If there is a live clam and you aren't attempting to keep it alive, when you apply heat and the shell will open. You can toss it in boiling water or on a grill if you happen to have a lit one around. If it is alive it will open. If it is not alive, it won't. But it won't be alive after that experiment.

Hmm.. ok.. thanks for that info. Courtney is now taking it back out to the field where she found it.

I am sure it was alive.. because you could feel it moving around in there.. very interesting.

The clam will die without water anyway. I agree it was dropped by a bird.

They are delicious though, we dig them at the beach here when it's low tide.
