Nope, every time my dad planted a cherry tree, it would die in a month.

Hmm, I have cherry trees but have no clue what they are. They are seedlings that we took from around a tree that was purchased by inlaws about 30 years ago. We also have chokecherry trees(they grow wild~sour but great for preserves) Your local nursery should have good variety for your area, just make sure that you buy from the fruit section. You also need a pollinator so keep that ornamental cherry tree you already have.

we had Montmorency Cherry trees out at the farm i n o ur Orchard. They aere, I believe a self poilinatior--but I only had cherries out of it 1 year it sure made a good pie. \but yea a nursery should be able to give you advice as to what would be best in your area
They will also be able to tell you if you need a pollinator or if the tree is self polinating

That's the only variety they sell here 'Montmorency', but it is grafted on another hardy rootstock.

Yea, I think ours were too--the add said the grafted trees were more hardy--we did not care, we just wanted a Cherry tree in our little orchard.--

We bought ours at Lowe's a few years ago.. not really for the cherries.. just to plant. I didn't mean to make it sound like it actually is just an ornamental.. we just bought it because it was pretty.. does that make sense?
But we have never gotten a single cherry off of it.. oh wait, I think maybe last year we did get one or two.. but they didn't taste very good.. maybe they weren't ripe yet.. I don't know. I have the tree, but really don't know that much about it.
