I never thought about that with the skimmer....Do you NEED to run it? I mean if it's sucking things in a lot could you nix it? Growing up my friend had an Olympic sized in ground pool....there were always frogs in the skimmer.....

I ordered my algae fix from Petco and it was on sale and I had a 10 percent coupon for any order.....I also bought a thing you stick in the water and as it disolves it feeds you fish for 7-8 days....good to have in case we go away this summer. If the Algae fix works well it will be worth it to me! I hate not seeing my fish until they are almost at the top.

Ah...the seating out there will be SO nice. You'll find yourself out there a lot. It's so relaxing.

I wish now I would've fed my fish every other day.....I was so excited to sit and watch them feed I did it every day, still do....not more than they'll eat of course....but my goldfish are so big now and eat so much. I use Pellet food for them.....just the type you buy at Walmart....they used to only eat one at a time, now the big fish can eat 4-5 in one bite!

I also supplement my mosquito fish with some flake food crumbled really small....not too much though, and before too long I'll slack off as their natural food source appears more(mosquito larvae).

Whatever I throw in is always eaten within 10 minutes...if not I scoop it out with one of my nets.

We do need the skimmer on to take the grass cuttings that Don got in there when he mowed, and other things out of the water. I watched the fish before dinner tonight from upstairs in the house - the water is so nice and clear that I can see them from up there now. I watched them play follow the leader - the white with orange seems to always be the leader - they were all very close to the skimmer, but seem to know about it now - I hope so!

I bought some pellets that get soft in water at WalMart the other day - thought I'd get the koi used to it in the tank in this room, but they would have noooooo part of it! They would not eat them at all, and I had to give them the granular food. I'm hoping they switch over once they are in the pond too.

I bet they will Lynne.....sometimes it takes a while for them to figure out a switch in food....I use the kind that get soft in water too.

Mark USED to get grass clippings in the pond.......until I firmly told him to mow with the blower pointing the other way. That used to drive me nuts.

It's so cool that you could see them upstairs......I'm hoping for that. Mine play follow the leader also. I have 7 in there now. 3 orange fancy tailed(big, medium, and small sized), 3 Shubunkins, and a White feeder fish....it's the only survivor of the 10 ten cent fish I originally bought for the old pond. I named it Mark. Mark asked me one day why I named that fish after him....I said, WELL...........it's just like you...all it does is eat and poop a lot. It's the most skittish of all of them too.

Oh hey, BTW....interesting thing....I had a leaf come up today on my new water lily....the old one though? Nothing!!! And it was supposed to be hardy, and it was submerged in the 3 foot end.

I DON'T SEE ANY FISH IN THE POND TODAY!!!

I hope they are just hiding in the small area of the pot that I cannot see into, but I've been looking for 2 hours now and don't see a single one! I even went out and looked in the skimmer - they are not in there!

I HOPE an animal didn't find them already on their first night out there!

If I don't see them by this afternoon, I'm going to turn over the pot and take a look... if they don't come out then I have to assume that an animal got them. And to think that I was hoping to get another baby koi at PetSmart today, as they are on sale this week.

Thanks Dodge and Belinda.

We do feed a feral cat on our deck, but I don't think he would fish.
I'm more concerned about the racoons to tell you the truth!

OK PHEW!!!

I couldn't wait for Don to call me back about how to look in the skimmer, so I went back outside and turned the pot over - YEA!!! I definitely saw 2 of the fish alive and well, and THINK I saw the third one too.

Please excuse my slight hysteria earlier - it's just that I love my pets so much!

Me too Lynne, I'm glad they are okay!

Mine hide a lot Lynne, especially if it's really sunny.....they mostly stay under stuff I have floating in the pond, or inside that Cinder block that is in there. Until they become really familiar with their new home they will hide a lot. When I first put mine in they hid for a long time.

I'm so glad I don't have to worry about Raccoons, we do have a lot of feral cats around here but I've only ever caught them drinking out of the pond.

I've been trying to find an all bright yellow baby koi at PetSmart, but haven't yet. I went today - they get their fish shipments in on Mondays. I did get 2 babies though - they both have yellow heads, and one is all white on the rest, and the other is white with black speckles. Now all FIVE of the fish out there have been hiding under the pot!!!

I did see the 2 koi when I fed the fish about an hour ago, but Don's shadow scared them and they swam back under the pot. The koi seem a bit more brave than the goldfish that I've had for 3 years already - strange!

Don took these pictures yesterday, so I thought I'd share them.
First is of the whole pond. Still a work in progress.

Next is the pot shelter.

And lastly a view of one side of the waterfall hill.

Lynne, is your pump/waterfall on all the time now?

Do you think as you add more fish that you'll put another shelter of some sorts in there?

How about your pond plants? Will you sink them in there now?

Very cool you got more fish!

Yes, yes, and YES!!!

The waterfall and pump have been on for about 2 weeks now, and Don even admitted that he "can't believe how much water was escaping by the top of the waterfall before!" UH huh - who kept saying that to him last year???

Yes I am looking for another shelter for the fish - definitely! Don't know what yet, but I started looking today.

Yes - I potted up the water lilies yesterday and put them in - they were not doing well at all in the house - actually fried a lot in the sun one day, so they are marginal right now. Keeping my fingers crossed for them...

Thanks for the compliment, Tamara!

Do I ask too many questions?

It's so great that you are finally getting some enjoyment out of your pond. I know how exciting it is....and as you plant stuff around it, things will start to look totally different and fill in.

Do you get regular birds, not ducks ( ) coming to drink out of it? I get tons with mine, even though I have 2 birdbaths.

ohhhhhhhhh loz - I have been enjoying watching the robins bathe in the waterfall from time to time. Not so thrilled about the starlings though... but it really has become a very nice natural habitat out there!

I'm so glad yours give you so much enjoyment too!

I still love and get excited over mine, but I'm really excited seeing you get excited about yours! Because I know that feeling.

I don't love Starlings either, that's when mom reminds me that they are still birds and God's creatures. And then I'm like, yeah I guess you're right.

Well... we did pull it out of the ground, but it's back behind the shed for now.

Gotta put Diane's ball in the water tomorrow - I'm too tired to go back outside mow.

A blue ball!

Do you think you'll put the tub anywhere, or will you get rid of it totally?
