I have a small variegated redbud tree (12 feet) that develops the same problem each year. The tree seems fine until summer really kicks in, then it slowly loses it's foliage from the inside out - it seems. It produces new growth, and the ends of the branches look good. However, for the most part, further in on the tree the leaves become spotted with rusty looking spots. Eventually the leaves brown and die. Further inside it becomes bare.
I'm working on getting some pictures posted.
Thank you, Josh

Josh, my redbud is having the exact same problem. this is my first summer with the redbud. mine is small and still in a pot, so I moved my into more shade a couple of weeks ago. I can't see yet, whether that has helped any. I'm still getting new growth too. thanks for the link, tina. I didn't see anything in the link that matched the problem specifically? I guess a little pruning wouldn't hurt?
