Although this is not available in all states, yet, I thought it was worth posting about.
Anyone who would benefit from a way to call for help but who doesn't want a button to wear around the neck now has the option of signing up with Safe Link.
Safe Link provides a cell phone and a certain number of minutes per month to anyone on SSDI, SSI, state aid, food stamps, or who has state medical insurance. This service is free of charge to the consumer.
A benefit of the cell phones is that they work wherever the person happens to be and not just at home. So if the customer gets into difficulty at the store or even on the beach, they aren't beyond reach of help.
The phone is a standard trakfone in appearance, manufactured by LG.
You can look Safe Link up on-line to apply in a couple easy steps.
Worth passing the news to anyone you know w/ health issues or limitations who could really benefit from owning a cell phone.

I haven't heard of this Safe-Link and am not sure if its offered here in Canada. But with me moving out we've been contemplating getting Grandma a pay as you go phone. Pre program the speed dial for her and the family would all feel better about her being on her own.

You could also purchase (or someone could sew for her a pretty one) one of those little pouches used for microphone paks for stage performances. It is just a very soft belt which closes with velcro, and a small fabric case the cell would slide into. It would be lightweight, durable, out of her way but always within reach. I know parts of Canada has Safe Link.
