Hi,

I bought a hydrangea (not sure what species) and it was pink colored, a year after planting it I noticed all the flowers it gets are a deep purple. What caused the color to change from pink to purple, as the flowers have been blooming purple for years now, never pink.

Hydrangea color comes from the PH of the soil. If your soil is alkaline, the flowers will turn blue. Acidic soil will keep the flowers pink.

Adding aluminum to soil will turn flowers blue/purple. "Add dolomitic lime, to raise the soil pH to about 6.0 to 6.5. This is a good range where hydrangeas can’t access the aluminum in the soil." flowers should stay pink if you follow directions on the bag.

Oh thats really interesting they change color depending on PH. I dont mind the purple, I was just wondering why it had changed.

It changed cause of the Lack of acid.
Do you buy the stuff at the store a put it on the plant?

They like acid.. I actually give my acid lovers vinegar water.

I actually prefer blue hydrangeas and add alkaline to make them blue rather than pink.

shock ...the colored ones won't over winter here, they are sold just as an indoor Easter plant.
