O.K. so my computer has only been hooked up for 2 weeks and I've already received a notice that I have used up 75% of my monthly usage of my 2GB. O.k. I know we installed new programs because it's a whole re-do and DH didn't know and uploaded 3 one minute videos so I'm sure that ate up a bit.
My questions are...
Does shutting down your computer and restarting it a few times a day eat up usage also?
and does viewing other peoples pics on sites such as these use extra as well?
Gee flipping 100 pages a day shouldn't have eaten my GB already...now I'm worried that I'll have to limit my time on here to an hour a day or so..
PLEASE HELP..

First, 2GB is not much at all, that's really really low... For example, this ONE page with just your post is 10 KB (10,237 bytes); that can and will stack up... And this site is pretty bare, add checking 5KB email messages and things start to stack up. honestly "regular usage" is the culprit here.
BTW, i use a couple hundred gb per month (we're talking 300 or so) for heavy usage.
And no, rebooting wont effect your traffic, unless you have a program that accesses the internet when yoru computer is started (like a chat client).
Also, many things use the internet, your email client, chat clients, your virus scanner, heck, windows checking for updates even uses some bandwidth.

That's more like it... Gives you room to breathe at least...
What provider are you with? I don't know too many that have usage limits other than cellular companies...

James, back in 1994 when we very first got the internet, there was a useage cap with our server too. WE got charged as if we had the next level of service if we went over. I only did one time though. Tamara, can you call the server & ask questions?? I think that would be a good place to start.. perhpas it WAS just the set up & stuff. --also what do you pay for overage?? perhaps an occasional extra charge would be better than going to the next level and always having a higher charge ??

It's through Rogers(our local cable company)...yup I called, they told me to shut down all un-needed programs and not to download or upload anything for 2 weeks, they are adding another GB for $5 which will get me through until March 1st, we call back in on that day and switch it to the next level(25GB) for $10 more....not what I wanted though...now internet is going to cost me $50 a month.

ouch that hurts, but if you can swing it, Having the internet these days is really convienient, plus I really enjoy it that you are back. I am thankful that bundles are offered with my server. That is the only reason I do not have dial-up now. the bundle we have gives me the phone service that I had before (unlimited calling in the US only-Darn) with all teh bells & whistles, mid-ranged cable--so our TV will actually work and the lowest DSL, so I am not on diaLup. before the bundle, I was paying $10.00 less and getting dial-up and the basic cable which really only gave us local channesl & news channels.

We only have basic analog cable and will have light internet...at the cost of $100 a month...a rip off but there is no other service or competition here.

I'm surprised that we don't pay more...high speed just ran through here last summer(finally)....they have a bundle for phone, cable and internet but everyone who had it kept losing their phone service. So we keep cable and internet but run through our old phone system.

I don't blame you there, Tamara. I too did not get the bundle right off. Eventually the brought it down to where it made good economic sense. I need to renew, but I am holding off for a few weeks. I am hoping that rates lower. If I sign early & they lower, I will be paying the highter rate for 18 more months.-- My kids do not even have a land line. They are getting internet thru their cell phones. For my part cell phones are not dependable enough yet to do that. I figure all I need is to call an ambulance or the police and have my cell phone dead or something...

We have Towers on the farm here an someone is to come an install the faster service for us .. After spring I guess.LOL Comcast is on the road below our lane, It doesnt come up our long driveway, we would have to pay to get it done. NOT me .....i will suffer till it gets better. Our electric company is still pondering if they can do it ?????? However for $17.50 a month, I wont panic. b I did have to buy my own Modem of the new computer.. They dont sell them anymore with modems.......... Thats history.
