05/16/13 10:30 PM New Rhipsalis by seaecho

I just got a little hanging plant in a 3" pot at Lowe's today. Its labeled as Acanthorhipsalis monacantha. I already have one of these, at least that is how it was labeled. The one I got today, however, has wider leaves. The other one has much narrower leaves. Can these be the same plant, or was it mislabeled?

05/13/13 04:08 PM Pests on Rose Bushes by Suzanna

I bought two new rose bushes from a store and planted them over a week ago. They have been doing all right, except I noticed a folded leaf on the John F. Kennedy rose. When I peeled it open, there was a green worm barely a half-inch long wiggling around on the inside! I immediately plucked the leaf and threw it away. That was a few days ago.

Today, when I was spraying down my roses to treat for blackspot, I noticed a folded leaf on another of the new roses (an Irish Gold). When I peeled it open, I saw strands like a spiderweb, but no worm. I plucked it off and tossed it. I checked on my JFK and saw no folded leaves but a lot of the leaves near the bottom of the plant have turned bright yellow! It's the only one doing that and wasn't doing that on Saturday, so it must have just done that either yesterday or today.

Anyone have any idea what could be going on? I plan on buying some pesticide when I can afford to but I want to know exactly what is happening so I know what I should buy.

05/13/13 01:05 PM Our kalanchoe is feeling under the weather by Cat_and_Scott

Hi, hopefully someone can help, as I'm at a loss of what to do with one of our treasured plants. It's a kalanchoe and has been in its present pot for 2 years (which was when we bought it very young). We were previously living at a property that had problems with damp and cold, and we have been living in our new property (no issues with cold and damp) for a year now. It suffered some kind of virus due to the cold, which made many of the leaves fall off. It seems to have recovered from that now, but now it seems that there is another problem. Our main concern is that the stems feel weak and withered, and some seem to be breaking of their own accord. Even some stems which have blooming flowers on them have wilted before the flowers have stopped.

Does anyone have any general guidelines for how to improve the condition of this plant? It has been watered whenever the soil becomes dried out 1 inch below the surface. It is kept in a window which gets lots of sun.

Thank you so much for your help,

Cat and Scott

05/09/13 11:42 AM Mother in law tongue by JoeNoble

I recently acquired a Mother in law tongue and the leaves seem to be too long to stand straight up so I was wondering if I could trim them or if I should propagate them.

05/05/13 08:16 PM Weird year for tomato seedlings. by DaisyM

I asked how to get fat tomato stems in a previous post, some joke on me, now I'm not even fortunate enough to have my seedlings grow. When the problems first arose, I thought my seedlings were getting better, at first they seemed to. Not so anymore. First year this happened to me that I won't be planting my own tomatos in the spring. The seedlings are pretty much the same size they were a month and a half ago. Absolutely no growth since. Out of 20 tomato seedlings, only 2 look like they will make it. The seedlings are not only small but the 2-3 leaves on each tomato are yellow and stay that way for quite a while before they shrivel away. However when I have pulled some, the roots are strong and thicker than they usually are. Also, my mother in law which is known for growing her prize like tomato plants has none this year either, she has the same weird growth like I do, her seedlings look identical to mine. We both bought the same soil at Wal Mart and we both water with the same water supply. It has to be one of those things? What else can it be?
We won't be able to salvage any this year, we will have to buy our tomato plants, but it sure would be nice to know what happened this year to both of our tomato seedlings?
P.s
Pepper seedlings are no better, they are the same with absolutely no growth for several weeks.

05/05/13 10:55 AM In the mood to cook? Foodie Bucket List by tkhooper

I don't cook much. But occassionally I'll get in the mood.

Recently I tried the joy of cooking recipe for biscuits. Wonderful! Even with powdered milk reconstituted. I've made some biscuits that were harder than rock so I really enjoyed these. Of course when something turns out well it doesn't last long.

The other thing I just picked up the last ingredient for is a black bean and roasted corn salad. This recipe is to die for. At least to me. It has the hispanic flare that I like. In fact I like it so much that I planted cilantro in the garden this year just to support this one recipe.

What recipes are on your "Foodie Bucket List?"

I'm looking for a recipe that will turn canned chicken breast into real food.
And with the pear trees outside I'm also looking for recipes that call for pears canned or fresh.

04/19/13 02:52 PM Need advice on a dying bamboo plant by LindyStallings

So I've had this bamboo plant for about 3 years and when it was given to me, it was placed in pebbles with water to the rim of the pot.
Recently, my cat chewed all of the leaves off of it and since then, it hasn't been the same. I cut the chewed leaves off of it and about a week later it started turn yellow.
I don't have it placed in direct sunlight and I change the water regularly. The leaves don't seem to be growing back and it starting to turn more yellow. I looked up that you could get fertilizer for water plants at any pet store and that will help it get more nutrients. Does any one have any suggestions? Please help!
