08/25/10 05:17 AM How to grow ginger indoors? by alicefred

Does anyone have any experience of growing ginger indoors? Maybe this topic has been discussed before, but I honestly don't know where to start from. I have been reading a couple of online guide on how to grow ginger, but still confused. Can anyone point me in the right direction and provide me step by step instruction? BTW so far I have found the best instructions at http://www.ehow.com/how_4576842_grow-ginger-indoors.html
Any inputs based on personal experience will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

08/23/10 06:42 PM Growing Kumato tomatoes, an interesting find! by KeithP

Last year I saw Kumato tomatoes sold at the supermarket, they are purple-orange sometimes with green patches and are rather sweet tasting. It said the company who produced these dont sell seeds and only special people get the priveledge of growing them.

I took some seeds from the fresh tomatoes, and grew plants from them this year.
This is what the "parent" tomatoes looked like.

I grew mine, and noticed they are smaller, and vary in color from pure purple, to half red/purple, to fully red! Nowhere in the companies description do they say they are supposed to be red! So in fact they vary in color, and each color has it's own taste. Red are most tart, purple are most sweet. I found this interesting.

08/19/10 04:14 AM Fall Projects... by tamara

Just wondering if anyone has some 'Fall projects' under way? Moving things around..adding in new items? Just being nosy

I am keeping an eye out for some bright colored mums..I have none and think it's time I added a plant or two..blame TK She gave me the idea with her post on planting some.

I also have two shrubs to move..they grew too large this year..you'd think when a tag says 3 by 4 it shouldn't grow to 6 by 8

I also need to re-do the crushed rock perimeter around my house..ugh, that's a big job.

08/17/10 12:46 PM Trying to identify a plant in my garden by CharlieJ

Hello,

I live in Philadelphia, PA, and have a large, yellow-flowered plant in my garden that I'm unable to identify, and I'm hoping you can help.

It has long stalks, almost tentacle-like, like an octopus. It's height is approx. 6 feet in places. Along the plant it has lots of little yellow flowers. It is much loved by the American Goldfinches that feed on it - it looks like there are lots of little seed pods along each stalk.

It doesn't appear to be a thistle or Nyjer - at least not one that I recognize in my searches online.

Can you give me any ideas?

Thanks in advance for you help.

08/14/10 11:59 AM black spots on yellowing leaves by howdy

...on all of the 15 tomato plants I have out in a field and 3 more close to the house in large pots. They are San Marzano Plums and Better Boys.

The damage began at the lower leaves and is moving up. Some of the worst affected plants are 1/3 defoliated already. The tomatoes themselves are fine so far except for some occasional bird pecks and bug problems.

We did get late blight last year from some big box store tomatoes (which got to our potoes too), but this problem looks different. The soil in the pots is not from out there but is from a compost pile about 500' away.

I have a couple of photos here:
http://how0909.freeshell.org/garden/problems.html

Anybody know what that is?
I have a feeling I will not be able to do anything about this crop BUT I'm interested any ideas y'all might have.

08/14/10 09:57 AM Soft Stem by LauraH

I have a diffenbacia that I grew from a cutting a cpl yrs ago. The plant is now over 5 ft tall with big dark green leaves. It looks the picture of health. But..yesterday after I watered it, I noticed the stick I have in it was falling over. I had to untie it (I use cloth strips to tie with) and my poor plant almost doubled over. It is so soft, yet the plant looks to be in good shape. There are no bugs in or on the soil. Can anyone give me any ideas as what to do or look for?

08/12/10 10:40 AM Flowerboxes on a deck railing by tkhooper

With the vinyl siding I can't figure out how to have flower boxes underneath my windows. So I was wondering how you put flowerboxes on your deck railing. I don't want to just set them there because I don't want Shadow, my cat, to knock them over and get hurt. I appreciate your sharing with me how to make them sturdy.
